It was musical beds in the RV overnight. Casey had a bad dream and came into our bed. Ron, recognizing that he was losing the blanket battle, moved to the over the cab bed where Casey had been sleeping. Then, Ally came in to join me and Casey because she was cold.

Just as I was drifting back to sleep, Ally, who is a big sleep talker, screamed “Thief! Thief! Thief!” almost directly into my ear. (This was one of her lines from the play “Aladdin Jr.” she was in earlier this summer at drama camp.) So, now, I was good and awake.

We started to pack some clothes back into suitcases to make Wednesday’s work less onerous and then drove over to Bright Angel Trail, one of the most famous hiking trails in the world.

You can take this trail all the way into the canyon, but we had no intention of that. We just walked enough of it to get a taste and then reluctantly had to get on the road to Vegas.

Today’s drive was our longest at 280 miles, though I actually made it a tiny bit longer (more on that in a second). We decided to take an alternate route for part of it so we could drive on Route 66. It was….underwhelming.

There were a few quirky road signs for Burma Shave, and a couple of kitschy roadside attractions, but generally I guess I was expecting more.

I did, however, finally get to drive the RV on this stretch and since it was mostly deserted, it was a good place to get my RV sea legs.

It wasn’t until the Hoover Dam wasn’t where I thought it should be that I knew we had a problem. About 5 minutes later, I saw the California State Line sign and had a sinking feeling in my stomach.

Somewhere I missed a turn and drove almost an hour out of our way and into California. Crap. In my defense, my navigator left me to nap and play cards so I was on my own. On the bright side, neither Casey nor Ally had ever been to California so they get to cross that state off.

We got turned back around and eventually made it to the Oasis RV Resort in Vegas. In true Vegas style, it had some video poker machines and an amazing pool that we hung out at in the evening. We abandoned our plans to grill burgers one last time and ordered pizza and watched TV on the cable hookup at the campsite.

The pool at the campground.

Tomorrow, we have the day to spend in Vegas before our redeye flight home.
